Billycans was an exhibition of artworks created by Artists from throughout Australia to fit in/or around a Billycan to celebrate the Year of the Outback 2002.

The official opening took place at the Waltzing Matilda Centre Outback Regional Gallery on 19 July 2002 at 6pm and was on display until 13 September 2002.

Earlier in 2002, Billycans exhibition organisers invited artists from across outback Australia to create an artwork representative of the theme - Life in the Outback - that could also be contained within a standard 4.5 litre billycan. The response to the exhibition was enormous and a collection of artworks by 58 artists was assembled. The exhibition then toured throughout Queensland from November 2002 to January 2005.

Billycans Co-ordinator Jan Brown says the unique blend of artworks was as diverse as its creators.
